Worked out really well. First time round I made it in a pressure cooker - needed about 10 minutes on level 2 to get the daal soft. My wife was very impressed - she doesn't like to much spice and this is more about texture and flavour than spice. Served it with the Spinach Potato recipe. Next time I made it up at my log cabin. Ingredients are so simple - no chana daal or leaf coriander for miles so I used dry split peas and forgot about the coriander. The effect was that I didn't need 3 hours, instead all was ready and delicious after 2 hours. The lemon is an added bonus. I'm not sure if the brown sugar is at all needed. Highly recommended.

It's just me and my husband here at the house, and I would double the recipe, to make life easier. I know that there would be leftovers, can they be frozen without losing the good character of the dish?

Yes it can although the potato degrades a little bit on defrosting

Sweet potatoes get cooked earlier than the chana daal so I suggest adding them later or use semi cooked daal. Also at the end little portion mashed added nice consistency to the daal. I loved the taste and simplicity of spices,
